Long ago I remember punching holes in cards to run FORTRAN programs for modelling heat transfer in cryostats. These days the software is considerably more easy to write but the problems are often more complex.

I use VisualBasic.Net to design application programs which address problems of heat and mass transfer. We have modelled everything from heat transfer in freezing tunnels for sales engineers, to oxygen diffusion in growth media for biology professors.

So often a rather simple model can help you to see new ways of improving your process or efficiency or to see the key factors determining the results in your trial.
